A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property near Verona to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who ran away following the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in commemorating the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
