Champions League Matches This Evening: Chelsea v Barcelona & More

Greetings to another evening of exciting Champions League football. 9 games are planned for tonight, with three British teams in play. Chelsea take on Barcelona in the key match of the night, whilst Newcastle travel to the French side and City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.

Current Standings

It's the halfway stage of the group stage, so the standings is beginning to form. Each of the six British teams are currently in the top 12, but there are only two points separating 5th and 16th place, thus there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. It’s all up for grabs.

Here are tonight’s matches, all kicking off at 8pm unless stated:

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (17:45)
  • Bodo/Glimt v Juventus
  • Chelsea v Barcelona
  • Dortmund v Villarreal
  • Leverkusen visit Man City
  • Newcastle travel to Marseille
  • Qarabag play Napoli
  • Slavia Prague v Athletic Bilbao

Historical Context

The sole past encounter involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have a peedie bit of history.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has earned Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil advantage away to Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Even though The Magpies arrived in the French south fresh from their restorative two-one home Premier League victory against Manchester City on Saturday, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their only on the road win since early April came in Brussels at Union SG.

Not that Howe was overly keen to discuss the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is distinct from Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available twelve and direct qualification to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
